To cure my boredom, I’m posting an inconclusive fix to an issue (or feature?) I’ve experienced using the PuTTY terminal emulator/SSH client for Microsoft Windows. It’s worth mentioning that PuTTY Tray is the version I prefer - it’s patched to include something that detects URLs and makes them clickable links, a feature frivolously left out [...]

A few hours ago Nine Inch Nails, the main artistic project of Trent Reznor, released a new album titled “Ghosts I-IV” under a Creative Commons license (source) that allows non-commercial copying and derivative works. A part of the album is available as a free download on nin.com and the band has themselves distributed the package [...]

Tämän tekstin julkaisin alkuperäisesti kommentina Tietoja koneesta-blogilla, jossa se toimii vastauksena Googlen uuteen Health-projektiin liittyvään lausuntoon.
Terveystietojani en luovuttaisi Googlelle tässä vaiheessa, mutta mielestäni tietojen saaminen ja antaminen tarkasti määriteltävien suostumuksien avulla, jostain hyvin toteutetusta kansalaisten asiointipalvelusta, olisi kätevää. Kattava periaatekeskustelu luottamuksesta jättiyhtiöiden tai valtion tietoturvaa kohtaan olisi kuitenkin tärkää.
Ennen kuin Googlelle luovutetaan enemmän tietoa (elän [...]

Yesterday, the Finnish IT magazine Tietokone confirmed that a user’s directory on the home page server of Helsinki University of Technology (HUT/TKK) was taken down due to it containing a copy of the wrongfully censored anti-censorship site lapsiporno.info (mirror). The article hints that the student’s access to other parts of the school’s IT services may [...]

The Finnish National Bureau of Investigation maintains a secret list of “child pornography” sites. Some major Finnish ISPs, although currently not required by law to do so, do block access to sites on this list.
The blocking, which is performed on the DNS level, has been criticized, especially since lapsiporno.info (”childporn.info”), a site discussing the practice [...]

Not much time passed after I posted my previous entry about using Firefox 3 Beta 2 as my main browser until I realized that while I had browsed around for almost a day without much trouble, I hadn’t used Ajax heavy sites such as Facebook and Wordpress’ admin interface.
As soon as I started using [...]

My 32 bit Ubuntu 7.10 (gutsy) system didn’t automagically configure the Epson Perfection V10 USB-scanner my employer keeps at the office, but following instructions posted on Ubuntuforums.org appears to have solved the problem.
I also made backup copies of both the current Epson drivers from avasys.jp and the Ubuntuforums post, see http://misc.nybergh.net/pub/drivers/epson_perfection_v10_linux/.
EDIT: The same procedure successfully [...]

I have previously, without any real luck, tried to connect a USB printer/scanner called Canon Pixma MP500 to a machine running Ubuntu Edgy, and later Feisty (7.04). The driver “MP500 Ver.2.60″ kept refusing to print anything more than a small part of the upper left corner of an A4 page. This driver, in other words, [...]
